Boston Terrier Art

4.9 (500+ reviews)

Boston Terrier art has an unfair advantage: the dog is already wearing a dinner jacket. The white blaze, the white chest, the black covering everything else. Photograph him with light on those big round eyes, upload it, and the markings come through exactly as they fall on your own dog rather than as the breed average.

A Boston looks permanently as though he is about to make a speech and has strong opinions on the subject. He is busy, faintly ridiculous, and carries himself with a seriousness that the tuxedo markings make funnier. Formal and academic settings suit him for exactly that reason.

Frequently asked questions about Boston Terrier portraits

Will the white blaze on his face be kept exactly?

Yes, exactly where it sits. No two Bostons carry the blaze the same way, and how far it runs up between the eyes is one of the details that makes the finished piece his rather than any Boston Terrier's.

His eyes go completely dark in photos. What fixes that?

Light coming from in front of him rather than above or behind. A window at his eye level works well. The eyes are large, round and very dark, so they need a catchlight or they read as flat black in the portrait too.

Does the flat face cause any problem for the portrait?

Not if the photo is taken straight on or at a slight angle. Avoid a full profile, which flattens the muzzle into the skull and loses the wide-set eyes that make the breed recognisable.

Is a black and white style a better fit than a colour one?

For this breed it often is. Monochrome and Studio Noir play directly to markings that are already black and white, though the Scholar in full colour is the more popular gift because of the joke in the gown.
