About This Style
Studio Noir is liquid silver and polished chrome under a hard flash, and it is the most stylised thing in the Luxury line.
Your pet wears a metallic wrap at the shoulders with chrome hardware, standing on a mirror finished floor that throws a clean reflection back. The palette is stripped almost entirely of colour: cool steel greys, bright silver highlights and deep glossy shadow, lit by a single undiffused source that leaves a hard edged shadow rather than a soft one.
The reference is high gloss studio fashion photography of the kind that was built on hard flash, chrome and an almost complete absence of warmth. It is deliberately artificial. Nothing about this portrait pretends to be a moment that happened; it is obviously a constructed image, and it is more striking for admitting it.
What keeps it from becoming a sculpture instead of a portrait is the face. The coat takes the metallic treatment, but the eyes, the nose and the markings stay exactly as they are in your photograph, which is what stops the whole thing tipping over into an ornament. That balance is the entire craft of the style.
It is the coldest thing we make, and it is the right choice for a modern room, a dark wall, or anyone who finds the gold and the crowns a bit much.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the metallic treatment change how my pet looks?
It changes the coat, not the animal. The fur takes a silver sheen and the light behaves like it is hitting metal, but the face, the markings, the eyes and the build all stay as they are in your photograph. If it ever stops looking like your pet, that is a fault and we will fix it before anything is printed.
Is this the same as your black and white style?
No. Monochrome is a straight fine art photograph with no clothing, no props and no colour. Studio Noir is a constructed fashion image with metallic wardrobe, chrome hardware and a mirrored floor. One is a portrait of your pet; the other is a portrait of your pet as an object of design.
Will it suit a light coloured pet?
Very well. A pale coat takes the silver treatment most convincingly because the sheen has something to sit on. Darker coats come out closer to gunmetal, which works too, and we adjust the light so the face still separates from the background.
