Her coat has no texture in photos. What am I doing wrong?
Probably using hard light. A Maltese has a single coat with no undercoat, so it hangs flat and silky with very little of its own structure. Soft window light or open shade gives it the gradation that makes it read as hair rather than paper.
She is clipped short rather than in full coat. Is that a problem?
No, and it is rendered as she is. A puppy clip changes the outline completely compared with the show coat that appears in most breed images, so the portrait follows your photo instead.
How old is the breed, really?
Very. Maltese-type dogs appear in Greek and Roman art and writing, which makes it one of the longest documented companion breeds. The classical styles are not a stretch for this one.
