My pug's face comes out as a black blob. How do I fix that?
Move him out of hard light. An overcast day outdoors, or a spot indoors near a window but out of the direct beam, gives the soft even light the mask needs. Flash is the worst option, because it blows out the nose and loses the folds around it.
Does the curled tail show in the portrait?
It depends on the style. Head and shoulder compositions stop above it; the full body styles show it, and the tight curl over the hip is rendered as your photo shows it, single or double.
